Nest thermostats shut down on one of the record cold days
Nest thermostats have been rendered inoperable on a record cold day due to a breakdown in online service. Users around the world have faced the problem of not being able to set up their site-controlled heating systems because the online service has stopped working. Similar problems have been experienced before.
The problem is that the United States, especially around Chicago, has been so cold on the coldest days that it has been below Antarctic temperatures. Officials warn that the temperatures could be life-threatening and that they could damage people's homes if their heating systems can't cope.
According to Down Detector, the Nest problem has spread around the world.

Did I mention to never link basic building control functions to cloud solutions? This is why distributed intelligence and local operation and logic are essential. There is no problem with cloud solutions if they offer extended solutions that add to the basic operation (e.g. voice control), but central functions and tasks that may compromise stability should never be left to cloud solutions.
If even Google can't be flexible with its cloud server solutions, who can? Solution: Stop relying on servers. Don't rely on servers.
